He chooses the victim. Then he chooses who will take the fall.
Etienne Marigold is an aristocratic patron of the arts, effortlessly charming and protected by wealth, reputation and borders. He is also a serial killer who treats murder as curation. In each European city he selects not only a victim, but a vulnerable working-class person whose life he can reshape into the perfect frame.
Marisol Marais is a queer working-class performance artist imprisoned for the murder of her girlfriend Josephine. She knows she was set up, but innocence is not enough when the evidence, press and legal machinery all point in one direction. Her escape turns a personal fight for survival into an international investigation.
Across Paris, Amsterdam, Florence, Oslo, Madrid and Gruyere, Marisol frees João Galamba, Manny Piletti and Tawfiiq Ali Mahdi, others whose lives Etienne destroyed with the same method. Interpol investigator Sengul 'Sheng' Turguk follows the pattern from inside the system. Together, strangers with different languages, skills and histories become a found family capable of seeing the structure behind the crimes.

The questions driving the story
Theme
Privilege as camouflage
Etienne's wealth does more than protect him. It makes institutions reinterpret evidence in his favor.
Theme
Art, authorship and control
Each episode links crime to a city and an art form, asking who gets to shape the story the public believes.
Theme
The framed become investigators
People dismissed as suspects combine the knowledge no official agency thought worth hearing.
Theme
Justice without a clean ending
Nineteen people can be exonerated while a wealthy killer still finds a way to vanish.
Characters

Josephine
Marisol's murdered partner, whose life and art remain more important than the narrative Etienne built around her death.
