At the center of the galaxy, truth is the most dangerous resource.
Oberon is a mining world near the galactic center, known to everyone who survives it as Dante's Station. Human cop Sullivan 'Sully' Reese arrives under the shadow of scandal with his fourteen-year-old daughter Tina, expecting a hard frontier assignment. Instead he finds an alliance of species built on a resource whose real nature could shatter every institution on the planet.
Humans run the police. Targs control the mines. Enyards administer finance and government. The indigenous Y'maa are treated as marginal and primitive, even though they are the oldest and perhaps most important civilization on Oberon. Each group needs Amberjack, but for radically different reasons, and no one agrees on what the ore truly is.
Reese's boss, Consuela O'Shaughnessy, is a formidable marshal hiding a dangerous secret: she is a xenopath who can read some alien minds at the risk of Mindblur and death. Tina explores the station beyond adult permission, bonds with hidden street children and begins to understand the genetic legacy left by her mother Alisa. Around them, Targ leader Daneek K'n-Jad, Enyard administrator Anyilar Sylia and Y'maa guide Phanx pull the case into religion, labor, family and buried history.
